Born in Asti, Italy, on January 20,
1957. He received the Dr. Eng. degree in electronic
engineering from Politecnico di Torino.
From 1990 he has been a professor of Computer Networks at
Politecnico di Torino, a public University in the
North-West of Italy.
From 1983 to 1990 he was with the Consiglio
Nazionale delle Ricerche (C.N.R.), the Italian National Council for Scientific
Research.
From 1986 his primary interests have
been on the first three levels of the OSI model and in
particular on internetworking (bridging, switching,
routing).
His current research topics include:
high speed Ethernets, virtual LANs, multilayer
switching, IPv.4, IP over ATM,
IPv.6 and Multicast applications.
His original scientific work
(1981-1986) was in the field of fault simulation of
digital circuits.
He participated to the design of the "Italian
Research Network" and of
the "Italian Public Administration
Network".
In 1995 he has been the president at
the European level of the IRISI
pilot project of the European
Union on the Information Society.
In 1995 he wrote a book titled "Computer Network: from cabling to
internetworking" that is
currently used as the classical course book in the
Italian Universities.
In 1997 he wrote for McGraw-Hill Italia
the book "Guide to IPv6".
Currently he is with Cisco System, San
Jose, CA.
